FANZINE

KIDS AGAINST CORONAVIRUS Coloring Mini Zine

Mar 12th, 2020 - Los Angeles, CA – I am already in lockdown, because I am Italian and I have been horrified watching what is happening there over the latest weeks. I am also watching a dozen kids playing outside my window and I realize how much information is needed. I am thinking about making a fanzine, something to inform and entertain, something to appeal to kids but educate adults too.

Mar 14th, 2020 – I made up my mind. It’s going to be an infotaining mini-fanzine that kids can color too. I am giving a crayon with it.

h. 1 pm: I am going out to buy the crayons. Keep distance, don't touch surfaces, shower when I come back home.

Mar 16th, 2020 – I am struggling with illustrations. I can’t draw. But I don’t think it really matters.

Mar 20th, 2020Printing, folding, cutting and assembling the kit.

Update: My friend Anna, Italian Researcher based in Israel, offered to ask her coworkers from different countries to translate the fanzine.

Mar 21st, 2020 – I printed a couple of dozens of copies and Ieft them where I spotted toys or kids presence, as I was walking my dog Hannah.

Update: I got back home, my friend Anna had already sent me 5 translations and more are coming.

Mar 22nd, 2020 – I told my friend Elisa, in Italy, about the project and that I would love her daughter, Zoe, to be the first kid to have and to take a picture with the coloring fanzine. She also offered to layout the A4 paper size fanzines!

Update: Working on the details, tomorrow I'm going online. I am pretty excited.

I uploaded all the coloring mini zines I have so far, I will keep uploading new languages as I receive them.

Mar 27th, 2020 – Anna, Elisa and I are working on keeping the page updated and creating an Italian Dialects section. Loving the idea!

Mar 30th, 2020 – We are getting positive feedback from different countries, especially from kindergarten and elementary teachers! But some also raised an issue about printers. Not everybody has one at home. So we will try to invite those who have one to print few extra copies and leave them somewhere in the building or the neighborhood where kids or their parents can pick them up.

Apr 2nd, 2020 – The first Italian languages and dialects are uploaded! Sicilian, Bolognese, Roman... I adore them, they remind me of the beauty and variability of my native language. I miss Italy.

May 11th, 2020VareseNews Bambini, a local Italian News Channel, wrote and article and interviewed me and Elisa about the project, focusing on the Varesotto dialect. So stoked! You can read the article here >>
